If you have not heard of Aldi and Lidl, you may be surprised to learn that these German “hard-discounters” are among the Top 10 largest retailers in the world.
They are a disruptive format, squeezing out costs and passing along low prices to shoppers through their small format supermarkets, right around the world.
Aldi is already operating in the United States with over 1000 stores and is definitely a strong competitor to Walmart in the US market.
And now, Hard Discounter competition is about to get even stronger in the US with the launch of Lidl stores this year. Remember Aldi and Lidl teamed out to force Walmart out of the German market in 2006!
Given the growth of Aldi and Lidl in the US, we feel it is only a matter of time before Canada pops up on their radar.
