Retail developer Rio Can has announced that they will be building Target’s “flagship” store for their Canadian operations in Toronto’s West End.
The first purpose-built Target (not converted from a Zellers store) will be built at St. Clair Ave. and Weston Rd.
The area already features prominent retailers such as Canadian Tire, Future Shop, The Home Depot, Staples and Shopper Drug Mart.
This will be an interesting placement for Target’s flagship given the neighborhood is difficult to access by road although the area has plenty of TTC bus connections.

From our original analysis this likely kills the chances of both the Galleria and High Park Zellers stores surviving in such close proximity and we have updated our numbers accordingly.
And in case you were wondering there are two Walmart stores within four kilometers of the site (Runnymeade & St. Clair and North Park Plaza).
The race is on. Target is showing us their power to launch a large number of stores (now 106 and counting) including ones built from the ground up all at the same time.
We stand firm that Target has been VERY conservative with its announcements of expected sales and store counts. They will surpass $6 billion in sales before 2016/17 – you can count on it.
