Starbucks has been making news lately as they capitalise on their overall brand strength (ranked 91st most valuable brand in the world in 2013 by Interbrand) to forge into new areas of business beyond their omni-present coffee shops.
A stronger push into Grocery, through single serve coffee offerings (K-Cup, etc) and non-coffee beverages. Two key acquisitions recently include the Teavana chain which is the Starbucks of the tea world; and La Boulange, a San Francisco based artisanal baking chain that will help them up their game in the food business.
La Boulange is now showing up in US Starbucks locations with their highly recognizable Pink signage dominating the food displays and an upgraded selection of food products including croissants that are baked “straight” as only croissants baked with 100% butter are allowed to be under French baking tradition!
It will be interesting to see how Teavana and La Boulange are played by Starbucks in the Canadian market as the coffee shop wars continue!
