Even if you call on Loblaws, it is likely that your rarely (if ever) make it to see a “YIG” store given their location in relatively remote and rural centres away from the industry hub in Toronto.
This chain is becoming more and more important as Loblaw converts Extra Foods stores in Western Canada and Save Easy stores in Atlantic Canada to the Independent banner.
We wanted to take a look at a recent store conversion and the store we visited is in Fernie, BC. The store was formerly an Extra Foods location and reopened on July 4th as a newly renovated YIG store including a busy gas bar and is located in the commercial hub that lines the Crowsnest Highway and leads to the legendary skiing at Fernie and points beyond in BC.
The store acts as a mini-Superstore with a range of services and a bright open concept building. The main competition in town is an Overwaitea store in the downtown core. The nearest Walmart is over 100 km away in either Cranbrook, BC or Pincher Creek, AB (for now).
The store has borrowed from best practice across the Loblaw business and provides a very pleasant shopping experience for this town of just 4600 residents and the surrounding areas.
