Calgary Co-op is a retailer that traditionally has been under the radar for most CPG companies given its relative small size compared to national players such as Loblaws and Walmart, as well as its concentration in a market far from the head offices of suppliers who tend to be gathered in Central Canada.
We recently visited Calgary Co-op’s (CCL) latest store that opened in early November and is located in one of Calgary’s new communities in the “deep south” of the city called Auburn Bay.
Since our last visit to a CCL store about two years ago, lots of things have changed with a chain-wide rebrand including its positioning as “Best Fresh” and renovations that took place while Calgary’s economy rode out the new reality of $50 oil.
The new store is a clear indication that CCL is a food player on par with innovators such as Farm Boy and Longo’s in Ontario and Save On Foods in Western Canada. The store backs up the “Best Fresh” claim without relegating the centre store to boring aisles of category management efficiency.
The complex also includes a Liquor Store and C-Store / Gas Bar that anchors the retail offering for this new community which will be well served by was CCL has to offer here.
We hope you enjoy this Virtual Store Tour!
