Cadbury Sizzles With Innovative Chocolate

Cadbury is a brand that is synonymous with popular, great-tasting chocolate. Cadbury in Canada is sold under many different product names including a wide range of different Dairy Milk bars, as well as Crème Eggs, Mini Eggs, Caramilk, Crunchie, & Mr. Big. Maynards products like Swedish Berries and Wine Gums and the latest Cadbury “Marvelous Creations” and “Buttons” products round out the brand offering.

Cadbury has been in existence since 1824, when John Cadbury started selling tea, coffee and drinking chocolate in Birmingham, England. Through its long existence, the company has adapted to a changing marketplace and has been innovative with its unique products that can be found on store shelves.

In 2010, Kraft Foods purchased Cadbury for US$18.9 billion. A short time later, in 2011, Kraft split into two separate companies: an $18 billion (sales) North American grocery business and a $36 billion (sales) global snacks company, Mondelez.

Since the creation of Mondelez we have seen a significant increase in the number of brand extensions under the Dairy Milk brand in Canada. The core Dairy Milk line-up includes the Dairy Milk Chocolate Bar, Bubbly, Pretzel & Peanut Butter, Cookie Dough, Sweet & Salty Peanut, Mixed Nuts and Popcorn.

The Dairy Milk franchise rounds out its extensive line of bars in the country with other bars including: Orange, Toffee, Mint, Fruit & Nut, Hazelnut, Oreo Cookie Crunch, Coconut Cashew and Dark Chocolate.

The integration of other Mondelez brands such as Oreo and Chips Ahoy! into Dairy Milk products shows the power of the global snacks player that was created by the merger of the Kraft and Cadbury snacks business under the Mondelez umbrella.

The first Marvellous Creations bars debuted in Australia, followed by the UK. Mondelez Canada recently launched a brand extension of its Cadbury Dairy Milk line and started selling Marvellous Creations at various outlets.

Dairy Milk Marvellous Creations are sold in three flavours – Jelly Popping Candy, Cookie Nut Crunch and Banana Caramel Crisp.

The Jelly Popping Candy bars are made up of sugar-coated candy pieces, jelly and popping candy. Cookie Nut Crunch contains biscuit chunks, crunchy nut caramel and roasted nuts and Banana Caramel Crisp contains flavours of banana pie with malted cereals, creamy caramel and milk chocolate.

Another unique Cadbury product is Dairy Milk Buttons. The packaging of this product gives it a unique appeal. Our Field Agents found some buttons at Wal-mart featuring cute animal packaging with pigs and panda bears and chocolate button eyes. These animal packages are sure to appeal to kids.

In the immense US confectionary market Cadbury products have been only sold since 1988 and the Hershey Company, based in Pennsylvania manufactures and distributes Cadbury-branded chocolate in the United States.

Cadbury in the US also tastes different than Cadbury chocolate in the UK. Tatiana Schlossberg of The New York Times stated that, “Chocolate in Britain has a higher fat content; the first ingredient listed on a British Cadbury’s Dairy Milk (plain milk chocolate) is milk…In an American-made Cadbury’s bar, the first ingredient is sugar.” The American chocolate also contains preservatives.

In spite of the differences, Cadbury chocolates in various countries remain popular as consumers seek the deliciously innovative chocolates.

Cadbury and subsequently Mondelez have built a stronger Dairy Milk brand in recent years by focusing on delicious and innovative chocolate products that are mainly geared towards milk chocolate. However, the company also makes dark chocolate bars and many unique bars that appeal to consumers.

The introduction of popping candy and jelly beans within a milk chocolate bar shows that this company is not afraid to push the boundaries and try unique products that otherwise may not have existed.

We expect that consumers can look forward to even more unique chocolate products from Cadbury in the near future!
